Beef and bacon hotpot

Easy and foolproof and one from the 'young mother, impressing friends' days:

1lb stewing beef - chuck steak is best but cheaper will do
6 oz bacon, any kind
A tin of tomatoes
A little garlic (optional)
A stock cube and some water

  1. Brown the meat in hot oil.
  2. Fry the bacon
  3. Mix all
  4. Add 1/4 lb sliced mushrooms for last 1/4 hour
  5. Cook in a slow oven, No 2, 3 hours

Serve with rice and peas mixed
